This is a Financial Freedom Update post. Each month I report the status of my journey towards more financial freedom and reflect on my progress. To learn more about financial freedom please see my Think Week 2021 post where it all started.

My big fall travel journey started early September when I left Denmark and traveled to New Zealand via Australia. I had a few days in Brisbane before arriving in Auckland for my ~ 2 month stay in New Zealand.

Results

I saved 20% of my income in September. I did not know what to expect in terms of travel expenses, except that New Zealand is not a cheap country to visit. And I guess the result shows.

As I no longer have a stable place to call home, this category refers to accommodation expenses – Hostel, Airbnb, Hotel, Camping, etc. My expenses are dominated by this category as I rarely picked the cheapest options (hostel bunk beds).

The Personal category is also rather high but it is mostly a new pair of trail running shoes and insurance for my trip.

Category Percentage of expenses
Home 48.33%
Personal 16.17%
Food 14.31%
Transportation 10.05%
Utilities 3.54%
Health 3.42%
Union 2.14%
Other 2.03%
